This movie has several ties to many well known totalitarian figures, both real and fictional. Evey is asked at the end of the movie to reveal the identity of 'V', to which she replies "He was all of us." V for Vendetta is viewed by many to symbolize the oppression of government and has been used by many anarchists and libertarians to promote their views. Although the character 'V' loses his life in battle, his attempt to open the eyes of the people and over throw an oppressive government are not in vain. The movie ends with the people of the United Kingdom coming together in a united front to stand against an oppressive government. With November 5th fast approaching we begin to see the plot unravel. After opening the eyes of Evey, 'V' begins to set his plan into action. His plan follows that of a historical figure named Guy Fawkes who, in 1605 on the 5th of November, tried to over throw Parliament by blowing the building sky high. 'V' plans to take down his totalitarian government and lead the United Kingdom in a revolution. We never learn his identity, save for the information given to us through out the movie, clues we must pick up on. 'V' stays completely masked throughput the movie in a Guy Fawkes mask.
We watch as Evey learns that everything in her world is not as it appears and that maybe the things that she has been told all her life are really fabrications by a fascist government. The movie starts out with Evey being attacked by the secret police known as the 'fingermen' She is then saved by a masked man who calls himself 'V'. Hugo Weaving plays V, a rebellious freedom fighter who has sworn to take revenge on an oppressive government.
Starring Natalie Portman as Evey, a blue collar worker who must decide if the hero she has come to know has become the villain he is trying to fight. The film takes place in London, England in the 2030 decade. However, the film was pushed back and did not release until March 17th, 2006. The film was originally scheduled for release on the weekend of November 5, 2005, the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, with the tag line "Remember, remember the 5th of November", taken from a traditional British rhyme memorializing the event.
